Art is Making Waves!

Students have begun creating their cross curricular abstract maps while learning about Jasper John and his map of the states made in 1961. We covered what was taking place at that time in the United States touching on MLK and how that was represented through his art in representing the Southern States as  more chaotic. I asked the students to think about something they thought was relevant in our current world affairs such as a natural disaster or political conflict and then think about how you would represent that through color or brush strokes. The medium will be  a study in pastels, then large hard stock with acrylic paint.

2nd Grade

Students are creating shapes borrowing from Gustav Klimt. The students are going to transport in time while creating whimsical shapes painting with gold leaf. This assignment will be used in a cross curricular project for coding with lower school Music. The medium used will be acrylic paint on canvas.

1st Grade

Students are learning about artist Henri Matisse’s cut-outs while learning about the human figure. Creating our class animals

We began this year exploring all our class animals by doing a charcoal study and then moving into a new medium. Third grade is currently working on their habitats, tree frogs are in a rain forest and wolves in a forest. They had an opportunity to use mixed medium: acrylic paint, Mod Podge, and textured paper.  They reviewed the artist, Henry Rousseau.

Second grade just completed their tiger sand pandas in Asia. They did vine charcoal study and then moved to canvas and acrylic  creating abstract animals . We reviewed Henry Rousseau and Picasso and African masks. We spoke about symmetry  and  creating our animal one dimensional We completed this project and have now moved into our Gauguin influenced cello. We are working with Indian ink and Chinese watercolor. This project will be a cross curricular project with Music where students will be receiving coding with chords with Mrs. Hasty.

First Grade started with looking at their Beluga whales and Dolphins using both pencils and watercolor . They created these animals in their habitat. We looked at Marc Chagall and some of his whimsical animals as we created our own animals. First grade then moved into portraits while looking at Modigliani, creating long S shaped curve similar to the trade mark of Modigliani portraits. We used mirrors attempting to replicate proportions. We looked at artist Chuck Close to create a graph to help with proportions. We did this in a wash using Indian ink.
